How does a website work?
The internet is a huge collection of computers all connected together to form the world's largest computer network. These computers can usually be classed into two different groups: clients and servers. The computer you are using at the moment to view the ohaso website is doing the role of a client; our computer (which is holding and 'serving' the ohaso.com website) is preforming the role of a server.
To visit a website you must first connect to the internet, open your browser (which you will be using right now to read these pages), and then type in the address of the website you want to visit. The following is a a web page:
- Your browser connects to a DNS server and gets the IP address of the website you are looking for.
- Connect to that computer (usually a server similar to the ohaso server).
- Request the web page.
- The remote computer (or server) will send the page back to your computer.
- Your computer displays the webpage.
So with that in mind what do you need to have your own website?
Most websites are written in a language called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), there are other languages used for the behind the scenes managment of a site, for processing forms etc, it is very common to use images in websites too. So this means that you need a programmer to make a website for you and a computer artist to create your images.
Now your going to need a web server to hold your finished site, this computer needs to be powerful, stable and secure. For our servers we use an operating system known as Linux (Redhat Linux), it also needs to be connected to the internet all of the time and this permanent connection needs to be fast.
The final thing your going to need is a Domain Name. A Domain Name allows you to access your website with something like www.ohaso.com, without a domain name your customers would have to type in something such as "192.168.0.1". You set up a domain name with companies known as registars, they hold your information and populate DNS servers across the world with it, this means anyone in the world can find your website easily. |
